XPO Logistics has cut their lighting energy consumption at its refrigerated storage depot in Norfolk by a staggering 66%, as a result of a lighting installation of Linear LED light luminaires.
In order to meet its Climate Change Levy obligations, while also targeting important savings on energy bills and maintenance costs XPO decided to re-examine the way it lit the chilled storage rooms at its Kings Lynn facility.
The busy XPO Logistics depot typically leave its lighting switched on for 12 hours a day. What's more, the existing 400W Son lamps emitted heat as well as light, which meant the chilled areas, required additional cooling. This drove up XPO’s carbon emissions even further.
Finding a comprehensive solution LED luminaires appeared to offer an effective answer to the problem of lighting energy waste. With lifespans of up to 10-15 years, plus low energy consumption, LED luminaries also generate much less heat, removing the need for additional cooling.
The demanding industrial environment meant we had to find a solution for the emergency option; we opted for a UPS central system from ABB to operate all of the luminaires if a power outage occurred.
XPO Logistics found that its lighting needed lamp and control gear replacement every two years, due to the short lifespan of the Son luminaires, the disposal costs, plus regular disruption and downtime involved in this overhaul only added to the costs.
The results of the project have been outstanding all round for XPO. The project's payback period is 2.5 Years.
